The photograph introduced by John Bull shows a tunnel beneath the Canadian section of the Western Front. His accompanying explanation describes extensive spaces cut below the trenches for movement between positions. Underground areas behind the front could also billet troops with protection from shellfire. Later visits required checks for gas and shells before entry. Those movement and accommodation functions extended beyond mining enemy positions.
