Canada retained a number of its large destroyers, especially Tribals, after the wartime fleet contracted. Haida was paid off in March 1946 and placed in reserve. Decommissioning and storage kept such ships available for later recommissioning as requirements changed. The policy preserved selected fleet capacity through periods when the ships were not in active use.
