Canada reveals the doctrine's reciprocal logic

Canada complicates a simple anti-European reading because the doctrine also promised American restraint toward European affairs and existing colonies.

Notes

Reciprocity after the War of 1812 is one explanation of the doctrine's limits. Washington asked Europe not to expand its political system in the Americas while promising not to interfere in European conflicts. Earlier relations had included British arms reaching Native American groups and American supplies reaching France. Existing British possessions such as Canada exposed the difference between excluding new intervention and dismantling established imperial relationships.
