Camperdown's frigates were freed to hunt

Frigate honours at Camperdown reveal an unusually permissive plan that released scouting and signalling ships to fight the Dutch frigates directly.

Notes

The frigates Beaulieu, King George, Active, Diligent, Speculator, Circe, and Martin also received Camperdown honours. Frigates normally stayed outside the line of battle to repeat signals, scout, and watch for tactical surprises. Duncan's plan focused on closing with and defeating the enemy, which reduced the need to hold them in that supporting role. Their direct engagement with Dutch frigates shows how a permissive commander's intent could give subordinate ships unusual freedom during a fleet action.
