HMS Campbeltown used captured codebooks, German-style signals, and an altered silhouette to approach St Nazaire while passing as a German vessel. The disguise did not need to remain perfect. Once the defenders sensed that something was wrong, uncertainty over what they were seeing could delay action longer than a simple false identity. Confusion also increased the chance of mistakes when the picture began to resolve, buying the raiders time during their approach.
