Terrain cuts off the Batavian command

Marshland and a canal isolated the northern commander, leaving troops unable to attack and another formation waiting for orders that never came.

Notes

An attempt to rally the northern force left its commander in marshland behind the canal. The position cut him off from communication with his own troops and the divisional command, while the canal blocked an attack on the British. The remainder of the seventh demi-brigade stayed motionless because its colonel received no orders and would not act without them. A maneuver intended to restore the battle instead disabled reinforcement and command.
