California's New Threat Upgrade improved anti-air warfare but disabled the SQS-26 sonar and removed ASROC anti-submarine capability. The mature NTU fit could initially outperform the newer Aegis system while Aegis still worked through early problems. Reactor power and improved Standard missiles made the ships powerful radar and air-defence platforms with relatively modest fuel logistics. California and South Carolina nevertheless lacked hangars, and their 1999 retirements made them the final US nuclear cruisers in service.
