Chapter ยท 3:33-6:16

Calder's honor and the fleet's need

The opening frames Robert Calder as a leadership case: a vice admiral who left Nelson's fleet with HMS Prince of Wales to defend his reputation.

Notes

Robert Calder's decision exposes the tension between personal honor and operational need. He wanted a court martial because official reports had not conveyed the scale of his Cape Finisterre victory to the public, and he took the 98-gun HMS Prince of Wales home with him. The Admiralty still trusted Calder, while other officers urged him to answer the criticism by staying for the battle they expected. His concern for reputation removed a major ship from the fleet shortly before Trafalgar and turned a personal choice into an operational problem.
