Master masons and construction continuity

Walter of Hereford and Henry of Ellerton succeeded James of St George, preserving construction experience while royal projects competed for skilled personnel.

Notes

Work at Beaumaris drew Master James of St George away from Caernarfon. Walter of Hereford had worked under James and was able to take over as master mason. He directed roughly four and a half thousand pounds of work on the northern wall and towers. Walter also spent about four years helping with royal work in Scotland before his death in 1309. His subordinate Henry of Ellerton then succeeded him, continuing the use of trained deputies to lead construction. Work and accounts continued until about 1330, with a quoted total of roughly twenty-six thousand pounds for the castle and town walls between 1284 and 1330. The succession kept practical building experience available as the Crown reassigned senior staff.
