The unfinished King's Gate killing zone

The projected King's Gate would have forced visitors through bridges, doors, portcullises, a turn, and fire from above before they reached the lower ward.

Notes

The planned King's Gate would have imposed a long sequence of obstacles on anyone entering from the town. A visitor would have crossed two drawbridges, passed five doors and six portcullises, and negotiated a right-angle turn before reaching the lower enclosure. Arrow loops, murder holes, and machicolations overlooked the approach. Another internal line of fortification was also intended beyond the gate. Visible gallery levels and high ranks of loops show how defenders could command the route from several elevations. The gate was never completed, so the entrance sequence describes the intended design.
