Construction logistics for a royal town

Town walls, a new quay, temporary stockades, shipped timber, local stone, and hundreds of workers reveal the logistics behind Caernarfon's rapid transformation.

Notes

The new stone castle formed part of a wholesale rebuilding of Caernarfon. Town walls and a new quay had to be created alongside the fortress so the settlement could be defended and supplied. A timber stockade protected the worksite while the permanent defences were under construction. Timber arrived by sea from Liverpool, while stone came from nearby sources, including Anglesey. Hundreds of labourers built the castle and town walls while digging the defensive works. Temporary protection and the transport of materials made it possible to carry out that work at scale.
