Chapter ยท 34:34-37:49

Cabral negotiated entry into Calicut

Hostage exchanges, elaborate gifts, and a silver trade certificate gave Cabral a formal opening in Calicut.

Notes

Cabral arrived at Calicut in September and treated the welcoming boats cautiously after da Gama's more difficult experience. He refused to go ashore until the two sides exchanged hostages. Richer gifts and more personal letters from Manuel I helped produce a commercial agreement with the Zamorin. The ruler's security-of-trade certificate, etched on a silver plate, made the Portuguese entry look formally settled before the later crisis.
