Burke saw all five George Washington-class boats completed: construction began in 1958, and the last was commissioned in March 1961. He also oversaw the design and much of the construction of the next five boats, the Ethan Allen class. Lafayette-class construction was already underway when he left office. Work on most of the James Madison-class designs was also progressing, so the program extended beyond boats completed during his tenure.
