The accelerated path to CNO

Burke's postwar and Korean War assignments are presented as deliberate career stewardship toward Chief of Naval Operations.

Notes

Burke's command of USS Huntington, work in roles-and-missions debates and defense research, Korean War staff service, and cruiser command gave him political and operational credentials. He also took part in the Korean armistice negotiations before moving through the Strategic Plans Division, a Sixth Fleet cruiser division, and command of the Atlantic Fleet's Destroyer Force. These assignments can be read as deliberate career stewardship that made an already strong officer difficult to match for the top post. In May 1955 he was selected as CNO while still a rear admiral, then promoted to admiral before taking office that August.
