Bulolo and the headquarters ships across theaters

The careers of Bulolo, Largs, Hilary, and Scylla trace amphibious command work from Torch and Husky through Normandy to the Far East.

Notes

Bulolo's service shows how a scarce specialist headquarters ship could move from one major landing campaign to another. She served in Operations Torch, Husky, Shingle, and Neptune before joining Force W in Malaya. Largs, converted from a French banana ship, also served in Torch, later acted as a beach headquarters ship, and finished the war directing operations in the Pacific. Hilary supported Commodore Oliver during D-Day, and headquarters duties shifted again after Scylla was disabled. These careers show the demand for dedicated command platforms and the expedients used when suitable ships were unavailable.
