Bulloch's postwar politics as a source-criticism lesson

Bulloch's life in Britain and Theodore Roosevelt's challenges to some of his political claims show why operational memoirs still require critical reading.

Notes

Bulloch's postwar life in Britain shows how political commitments could harden over time. Denied Union amnesty, he remained there and developed an intensely hostile view of William Ewart Gladstone. Theodore Roosevelt, although sympathetic to his uncle, sometimes challenged claims that seemed too far-fetched. Bulloch's recollections therefore require the same source criticism as Semmes's. Their operational detail remains useful, but their later political judgments cannot be accepted as neutral history.
