A railway success that could not be sustained

Confederate rail reinforcement demonstrates the value of interior lines at Bull Run, while the South's less integrated industrial network limits repeated use of that advantage.

Notes

Confederate rail reinforcement before Bull Run was a real logistical success. Interior lines let the South concentrate troops after slow Union positioning gave it time to act. The achievement exposed a longer-term weakness, however: the Confederate railway network was less integrated and less sustainable than the Union system because of the industrial imbalance. The Union could maintain rail movement over a long conflict, while the Confederacy struggled to repeat the same concentration.
