The South's missing east-west links

The Confederacy lacked a reliable east-west system linking New Orleans to Richmond, and prewar investment in fast commercial shipping might have offered another limited transport option.

Notes

Confederate transport networks had many north-south links but weak east-west communications. A direct, maintainable railway between New Orleans and Richmond would have reduced dependence on vulnerable sea routes. Another proposed preparation was for commercial shipping firms to acquire fast vessels before war. Neither measure erased the Union's far larger resources, but both show where Confederate logistical planning was thin.
