The case for delaying Confederate secession

A Confederate leadership committed to secession might have improved its odds by delaying confrontation and investing more time in infrastructure and state preparation.

Notes

Assuming secession remained the goal, a longer delay might have improved Confederate preparation. Lincoln's early political management is described as conservative in method, despite being more radical than some predecessors, so immediate war was not the only possible timetable. More time could have gone into infrastructure and state capacity before the conflict hardened. Confederate success would still have been unlikely against the Union's resources, although timing and preparation remained choices within an already risky project.
