Bulkheads, blast, and luck in naval casualties

A short aside explains how a bulkhead, blast concussion, and simple chance could separate survival from injury or death aboard a warship.

Notes

Naval combat produced abrupt differences between survival, injury, and death. A major hit could leave one sailor untouched while concussion and shock transmitted through the hull injured someone nearby. A single bulkhead might separate personnel who were killed from those who survived. Large weapons and confined shipboard spaces made the boundary especially stark. Experience of battle taught naval officers how much casualty outcomes could depend on position and chance.
