A defensive castle at the edge of control

The closing argument uses Builth as an inland exception to the Ring of Iron: a river-edge defensive site protecting already controlled land.

Notes

Builth tests the series' maritime argument because it lies far from the sea. The site stands beside a large river at the edge of English-controlled territory. The castle was more defensive than offensive: it protected the part of Wales already held rather than helping to conquer territory beyond it. Once that controlled area became secure, the reason for further investment weakened. The closing joke casts Builth as a poisoned chalice because so many of its owners met bad ends.
