Building the Kriegsmarine's officer corps

Raeder moved Lutjens from Karlsruhe into personnel leadership, where forming the expanding Kriegsmarine's officer corps accelerated his rise to rear admiral.

Notes

The world cruise led directly into an institution-building role during German naval expansion. In June 1935, Lutjens met Karl Dönitz after Raeder identified him as the future head of the officer-personnel branch and tasked him with forming the new navy's officer corps. Rapid rearmament required trained leaders and shared professional knowledge as much as new ships. Lutjens later returned to torpedo-boat leadership, but by October 1937 he had reached rear admiral after commanding only one light cruiser. Raeder's confidence and the Kriegsmarine's expansion accelerated promotion faster than Lutjens could accumulate large-ship command experience.
