Building professional naval education from scratch

Nineteenth-century naval educators lacked mature models and had to develop both their curriculum and their institution through experimentation.

Notes

Modern professional education can borrow methods and compare experience across fields. One example is medicine's use of airline cockpit-command methods, though practitioners still debate whether that borrowing has gone too far or not far enough. Britannia's educators from the 1860s through the 1890s had far fewer precedents and built their program while its requirements kept growing. Moving from training hulks to a college ashore changed both the institution and its educational methods.
