Redefining a sustainable career in history

After years of academic job applications and repeated rejection, books, teaching, public history, television work, and audience support offer another route to a viable career without a permanent university post.

Notes

A permanent academic post remains an ambition, but years of applications and an interview rate of roughly one in eight show the emotional cost of making it the only measure of success. YouTube also does more than publicize finished work because viewers send articles, research leads, and personal contacts that can enrich future projects. Patreon and merchandise income provide a modest but predictable fund for archive days, allowing a contract lecturer to decline some teaching hours without resorting to credit-card debt. Books, occasional university teaching, public video, and television work can reinforce one another. This mixed career differs from the tenure-track future first imagined, yet it can still support a meaningful living in history.
