Bretagne's main belt reached 250 mm over the central part of the hull, with thinner protection toward its edges and the ship's ends. A 45 mm horizontal armored deck connected to the lower belt through 70 mm slopes. Turret-face armor also varied: turrets one and five had 340 mm, two and four had 250 mm, and the amidships turret had 300 mm. The stated reason for varying turret protection was to avoid excessive loading at the ends. An 8 mm longitudinal torpedo bulkhead offered a much thinner layer of underwater protection.

Bretagne's armor varied with position and structural load
Different belt, deck and turret thicknesses show how Bretagne's protection depended on location and the weight the hull could carry.
