Paladin carries a diplomatic detachment, but its ambassador knows one destroyer cannot reverse the attack on the system. A one-light-minute separation imposes a two-minute round trip on messages with the local command. The surviving local admiral expects to surrender and warns that the resulting terms could force her own security forces to hunt the visitors. Paladin therefore withdraws while arranging future contact and aid, with the possibility of drawing pursuing ships toward an allied carrier. The attackers' refusal to answer surrender messages undermines the assumption that they want submission. Their uncharacteristic silence and anger leave Henry uncertain whether his experience of the enemy still predicts its behavior.
