Exeter's name history includes a cancelled frigate

Exeter's succession runs through sailing warships, a wartime cruiser, an unbuilt frigate, and a Type 42 destroyer.

Notes

Exeter's entries begin with sailing warships of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The sequence later reaches the cruiser sunk fighting a Japanese squadron off Java. A frigate ordered in 1956 and cancelled in 1957 also appears, with an intended armament of two 4.5-inch guns and two 40 mm guns. The Type 42 Batch 2 destroyer follows. A name history can therefore preserve an unbuilt proposal alongside ships that entered service.
