Why did Britain not build long-range submarines like those of the United States?
Short answerBritain's bases and expected operating areas reduced its range requirement, while American submarines needed greater endurance for ocean crossings and distant patrols.
NotesAmerican submarines needed the endurance to operate across the Pacific or Atlantic. British planning could make use of home and overseas bases for operations in the Mediterranean, North Sea, North Atlantic, Indian Ocean and East Asia. The T boats are acknowledged as having substantial range, while Britain's usual requirements did not demand the same endurance as American fleet boats. Either navy could use the other's designs, but the fit would involve compromises. American boats would be large for some British operating areas, while British boats would lack the reach required for American missions.
