Some ships' histories seem to contain enough fortunate escapes to invite the joking description of plot armour. HMS New Zealand and HMS Ashanti are the examples here. In the Tribal destroyer comparison, a large bomb falls far enough from Ashanti that she merely gets wet, while comparable hits cost other ships their bows. This is a humorous way of describing a fortunate escape.
