Ships designed around heavy cruise missiles and hypersonic threats can lack the lower defensive layer needed against cheap drones. As sophisticated missiles became more expensive, drones appeared beneath the threats those ship fits were designed to defeat. Italian 76 mm guns provide one example of an existing response. Type 31's 57 mm gun and two 40 mm weapons are expected to engage approaching drone boats well before they reach the ship.
