Question

Who is the greater heretic, Belisarius Cawl or the Dark Mechanicum?

Short answer

The Dark Mechanicum is judged closer to heresy through its allegiance to Chaos, while Cawl is credited with understanding the Emperor's methods.

Notes

Within the fictional setting, allegiance to Chaos places the Dark Mechanicum closer to heresy in this interpretation. Some members followed their superiors without much individual choice. Cawl is credited with understanding the Emperor better than the Mechanicus does. The Emperor's scientific achievements depended on teams. Programmes named after leading scientists illustrate that collaborative structure.
