LHAs serve amphibious formations whose central task is putting troops ashore. Strike aviation supports that task, though shortages of nuclear carriers encourage more strike capacity aboard some LHAs. These formations cannot substitute for a carrier battle group across its full range of roles. Anti-submarine warfare and airborne early warning are particular limits to that substitution. Amphibious groups still provide their own deterrence and operational value.
