Could a longer-range weapon carry a torpedo and release it closer to the target?
Short answerThe approach has precedents. Carrying a heavy payload and releasing it at a suitable speed remain constraints.
NotesCarrying a torpedo nearer its target has a long history. ASROC, SUBROC and Russian rocket systems illustrate the broader family of stand-off underwater attacks. Such weapons provide reasonable attack methods without becoming decisive superweapons. A heavy torpedo adds weight without contributing lift to an airborne carrier. Slowing down for release creates another constraint. The earlier historical examples raised in chat offer less useful comparisons than newer systems.
