Obstacles to invading Canada during the Civil War

Reinforcements, mobilisation and difficult approaches to Halifax complicate a hypothetical Union invasion.

Notes

Britain reinforced Canada during the Civil War, and Canadians mobilised. An invasion beginning around October would face a difficult season, though that proposed timing is tentative. Canada's Loyalist population also challenges assumptions of a welcome for incorporation into the United States. Halifax illustrates the difficulty of reaching British garrisons by land. A naval attack would confront the local Royal Navy squadron. In this comparison, it was probably stronger than the contemporary US Navy even without reinforcement because Congress had been reluctant to fund the American service.
