Can the 1976 ultra-carrier proposals be called the Tillman designs of supercarriers?
Short answerThe comparison fits their scale, but dry-docking and manoeuvrability raise basic doubts about operating such enormous ships.
NotesThe 400,000 to 500,000 ton proposals can reasonably be compared with the Tillman tradition of extreme paper designs. More recent carrier concepts are recalled at around 750,000 tons, including an enormous twin-hull, twin-island arrangement. Their scale raises basic operating questions before combat capability is considered. A navy would need to explain where such a ship could be dry-docked and whether it could manoeuvre adequately.
