Type 45 stealth and the escort mission

Type 45's low-observable design is weighed against the radar and weapons needed to defend a carrier or convoy.

Notes

Type 45 was a strong low-observable design for its period and for North Atlantic conditions. Its task is to protect assets with much larger signatures, including carriers and merchant ships. When an attack develops, the destroyer must radiate with a powerful radar and engage with Sea Viper. Extra stealth has diminishing value if it displaces the firepower needed to protect the ships that cannot hide.
