How carrier air control differs from Aegis missile defence

A carrier needs an air-operations command system, while Aegis is built chiefly to control the escort's missile-defence battle.

Question

Why is Aegis not fitted to aircraft carriers such as the Ford class?

Short answer

A carrier needs an air-operations command system, while Aegis is built chiefly to control the escort's missile-defence battle.

Notes

Aegis is optimized to detect threats, manage missile engagements, and control a vertical-launch air-defence system. A carrier must organize aircraft, deconflict the wider air battle, and support combat air control. Hawkeye aircraft normally extend that picture, while the carrier may need to assume more control if airborne early warning is unavailable. Similar radar hardware does not remove the difference between the command systems and missions beneath it. Missile launches also raise concerns about foreign-object debris around a flight deck.
