What would the perfect well-rounded navy look like, and which country is most likely to build it?
Short answerThe answer depends on national geography and missions; a balanced navy is one whose carriers, submarines, escorts, people, and support match those needs.
NotesA well-rounded navy has to match its country's interests and needs. Wide-area sea control may call for carriers, submarines, and a carrier battle group. A more limited sea-lane mission could instead use conventionally powered submarines, a surface action group, and perhaps anti-submarine helicopter carriers. Belgium, Italy, the United States, and Japan therefore need different balances. Whatever ships are chosen, resources and training must support the intended missions.
