Why uncrewed systems may not shrink ship crews

Ship-control crews may fall, but drone operators, maintainers, engineering teams, and hotel services can keep the total personnel requirement high.

Question

Will navies move toward minimally crewed ships supporting uncrewed vessels?

Short answer

Ship-control crews may fall, but drone operators, maintainers, engineering teams, and hotel services can keep the total personnel requirement high.

Notes

Uncrewed craft still need operators, maintainers, engineers, and repair teams, much like an embarked helicopter detachment. Some specialists must remain aboard to control the other systems while colleagues work on a damaged craft. They also need accommodation, food, medical care, and other support even if automation reduces the core ship's company. Future ships may therefore change who serves aboard more than they reduce the total number of people.
