Lasers, deep-diving drones, and undersea communications

Laser deployment depends on ships receiving the equipment, while deep-diving drones face severe limits on communications.

Question

Which navy may field the most shipboard lasers, and can uncrewed submarines dive deeper than SSBNs?

Short answer

The US Navy is the likeliest early leader in laser numbers, while small robust drones can dive deeply but become dependent on autonomy because useful communication at depth is extremely limited.

Notes

Smaller uncrewed submarines can be built to withstand greater depth, but there they must largely trust onboard computers because high-data-rate communication is unavailable. Extremely low frequency systems can reach submerged craft only with enormous infrastructure and very low information capacity. Royal Navy laser plans include Type 45 and other ships, while American totals are expected to grow sooner. The projected totals remain uncertain until the equipment is fitted.
