One proposed Colonial escort would carry guns and missiles behind heavy armor, with almost no aviation capacity. A single Raptor docking point would remain for personnel transfers. In this imagined design, ordinary fighter strafing would do little damage, allowing the escort to close with a basestar and attack with gunfire. Nuclear-armed attack craft remain an explicit exception to that protection. Large battlestars would retain the combined battleship-carrier role, which the proposal considers reasonable within the setting.

Armored Colonial escorts built to close with Cylon basestars
A proposed escort trades its fighter facilities for armor and close-range firepower, with nuclear weapons remaining a serious threat.
