Why one war's interception record cannot fix the next war's balance

Patriot and post-Falklands changes to Sea Dart, Sea Wolf, and Phalanx illustrate how combat experience alters later encounters.

Notes

Offensive and defensive systems both change after combat, so a measured result belongs to a particular set of weapons and circumstances. The discussion uses Patriot's reported Gulf War performance as an example of public claims that differed from the lessons applied afterward. Attackers also revise their weapons, so the next encounter could favour either side. The Falklands example concerns subsequent Sea Dart and Sea Wolf software changes and wider adoption of Phalanx. Repeating the same attack two years later would therefore not necessarily reproduce the 1982 result. An assessment of vulnerability needs to allow for that continuing competition.
