German battlefield skill and horse-dependent logistics

The contrast between mobile Panzer divisions and the infantry needed to hold ground shows why German battlefield skill did not remove logistical constraints.

Notes

German soldiers could be well trained and drilled while their army still faced persistent logistical problems. Much of its transport depended on horses and carts. Accounts concentrating on Panzer divisions can overlook the infantry required to hold territory and fight defensive actions. The speed of an armored formation therefore gives an incomplete picture of the army supporting it. This example qualifies the argument that superior weapons or battlefield skill could compensate for greater enemy numbers and industrial capacity.
