Babylon 5's Omega and Nova fleet-design tradeoffs

The Omega-Nova debate weighs fleet variety, improved beam weapons, older gun batteries, and crew accommodation without reaching agreement on which design is better.

Notes

One interpretation defends Babylon 5's small range of human warship classes as a response to the setting's threats: large gunships and smaller fighter carriers meet the important requirements. Others regard the limited mix as a weakness even within that setting. The Omega's new technology is compared with a dreadnought revolution, but that analogy is challenged because the design is described as smaller and less well protected than its predecessor. Better beam weapons are weighed against the Nova's greater number of guns, with pulse weapons described as interceptable and possibly more vulnerable to jamming. Another interpretation sees an economy measure combined with new equipment. The rotating section receives a separate defence because gravity in living and command spaces helps the crew rest and work, even when the engines and main weapons remain outside it.
