Political assassinations in Britain, 1812 to 2021

A compact chronology follows the assassination of British officeholders from Prime Minister Spencer Perceval in 1812 through Jo Cox and Sir David Amess.

Notes

Spencer Perceval was assassinated on 11 May 1812 and remains the only serving British prime minister killed in office. The chronology then moves to Lord Frederick Cavendish in 1882 and Sir Henry Wilson in 1922. Airey Neave, Robert Bradford, Sir Anthony Berry, and Ian Gow were killed between 1979 and 1990 in attacks attributed here to Irish republicans. Jo Cox was killed by a neo-Nazi white supremacist in 2016, and Sir David Amess was killed by an Islamist extremist in 2021. The sequence shows that political assassination in Britain spans distinct periods and perpetrators rather than belonging to one conflict alone.
