The Deutschland class should not be read only through its famous pocket-battleship or commerce-raider image. The ships originated as replacements for pre-dreadnought coastal defence vessels intended for Baltic service. Added endurance allowed them to operate as long-range surface raiders, but that capability did not erase the design's underlying purpose. Their rapid withdrawal from ocean raiding early in World War II exposes the difference between an added capability and a role for which a ship is fundamentally optimized.

The Deutschland class began as a treaty-era replacement for coastal defence ships before its range enabled an ocean-raider role.
