Tests of historical English comprehension depend on who takes them. History and language students may already recognise older vocabulary, giving them an advantage over someone without that background. Their results can therefore overstate how readily an unprepared modern listener would understand speech from the past. Students recruited from the researcher's own courses are questioned as a representative sample. This caution also affects estimates of how far back a modern naval officer could command effectively.
