Why Talos would add little in the Falklands War

A hypothetical Talos deployment in 1982 raises questions about missile version, support burden, and whether Britain had a usable hull large enough to carry it.

Question

Would a Royal Navy Talos ship have materially helped during the Falklands War?

Short answer

The panel expects limited benefit, chiefly because Talos was burdensome and a suitable large ship was not readily available; the range comparison depends on the missile versions.

Notes

Talos is treated as an aging, demanding system by 1982, although its useful range depends on the version under discussion. An initial comparison with Sea Dart is qualified when the later RIM-8J's longer reach is considered. That extra range still leaves the problem of finding a suitable British ship: County-class destroyers are dismissed as too small and Bristol is only a possible candidate. Tiger and Blake remained physically afloat, but the panel describes reactivation estimates measured in many months after their decline in reserve. A favorable comparison with Sea Slug therefore does not establish that a Talos ship could have been ready for the Falklands campaign.
