When is the Brazilian monitor Parnaiba likely to leave service?
Short answerProbably only when it can no longer float or perform its riverine mission; freshwater service and repeated upgrades may keep it useful for years.
NotesParnaiba was launched in 1937 and commissioned in 1938, but its age alone does not decide when it must retire. A maintained hull operating mostly in freshwater still meets Brazil's need for river patrol. New diesel engines and repeated upgrades have extended its usefulness, although the engine-replacement date is not recalled confidently. Continued service remains plausible while the ship can float and perform that mission, especially when replacing it would cost money for much the same role.
