Why carriers should not become their own area-defence escorts

Adding large missile batteries to a carrier interferes with flight operations and duplicates the layered protection supplied by escorts.

Question

Should aircraft carriers carry enough missiles to defend themselves without escorts?

Short answer

No; they need point defence, but dedicated escorts provide better close and area defence without disrupting the flight deck.

Notes

Missile launches create foreign object debris on the flight deck, requiring clearance before aircraft operations can resume. Sponsons reduce interference but do not remove it, and cold launch still scatters fragments from cell caps and other components. The proposed division of labor leaves the carrier with point defence, Type 45 destroyers with the task group's area air defence, and a gun-and-CAMM-heavy Type 31 with the close protective role. A separate escort can also move to face the threat or leave to perform another task.
